AIMS AND SCOPE
Zoology and Ecology (formerly known as Acta Zoologica Lituanica) publishes original scientific research papers, reviews, and short communications dealing with animal ecology and all aspects of zoology presented within an ecological context (including, but not limited to behavior, morphology, physiology, systematics, and biogeography). There is no bias regarding taxon or type of natural ecosystem. Papers concerning man-made (e.g. agricultural) ecosystems can also be considered as long as there are demonstrable ramifications for natural environments. Geographically, priority is given to studies conducted in the Baltic countries and Eastern Europe, but relevant studies from all regions are welcome.
Fields covered: Animal Behavior; Animal Ecology; Animal Physiology; Biodiversity; Environment & Ecosystem Services; Habitat Interactions; Invertebrates; Natural History – Evolution and Adaptation; Vertebrates; Zoology.
JOURNAL INFORMATION

SUBMISSION
Manuscripts are submitted by filling the online submission form
(https://zoologyandecology.gamtc.lt/en/new-order). Submission should be
accompanied by a cover letter in which the author(s) must declare that the
manuscript and its illustrations are original, have not been published
previously and are not being currently considered for publication elsewhere.
The cover letter should also include the names, positions, affiliations and
contact details for three (3) independent referees with whom the authors have
not collaborated in the past three years and who are not employees of the
authors’ institution(s). The cover letter can be uploaded as a supplement in the online manuscript submission form.
STRUCTURE AND FORMAT
All research articles, short communications
and review manuscripts should be arranged as follows:
Cover page containing:
1. Title (short but informative preferably
not exceeding 100 characters).
2. First name (in full) and surname of the
author(s).
3. Affiliation and institutional address of
the author(s), e-mail (preferably institutional) of each author.
4. Abstract (up to 250 words) covering the
rationale or need for the investigation, the main hypothesis, methods, key
results, the main conclusion and its implications. Each of these 5 elements
should not require more than 1-2 sentences, but all should be present.
5. Keywords (minimum of 5, maximum of 8).
Preferably they should not appear in the title.
For Research Articles the main manuscript
text should be structured by subdivision into Introduction, Methods, Results,
Discussion (or Results and Discussion), Acknowledgements (including funding
sources), and References (as per the specified journal style description and
examples). Short Communications should have a brief
Introduction, and the Methods and Results can be combined; Reviews will comprise an Introduction, Discussion and Conclusion.
In the main text of full research articles,
no more than four unnumbered heading levels should be used with text commencing
from the left margin.
SI units should be used throughout, with
their standard symbols.
Text
The manuscript should be typed using Times
New Roman, 12 pt on A4 size sheet (type area 18×24 cm), 1.5-spaced with default
blank spaces on the margins, and lines continuously numbered.
Referencing style
Citations: All citations in the text should
refer to:
1. Single author: the author's name
(without initials, unless there is ambiguity) and the year of publication;
2. Two authors: both authors' names and the
year of publication;
3. Three or more authors: first author's
name followed by 'et al.' and the year of publication.
Citations may be made directly (or parenthetically).
Groups of references can be listed either first alphabetically, then
chronologically, or vice versa.
Examples: 'as demonstrated (Johansson,
2000a, 2000b, 1999; Johnsson and Peterson, 1999) ... Or, as demonstrated
(Peterson, 1999; Johnansson, 2000) … Kublick et al. (2010) have recently shown
…'
Reference list
References are given under the author’s or
editor’s surname; titles of magazines and publications should be unabbreviated.
References should be arranged first alphabetically and then further sorted
chronologically if necessary. More than one reference from the same author(s)
in the same year must be identified by the letters 'a', 'b', 'c', etc., placed
after the year of publication. Only published papers are to be included in the
reference list. The publisher should be mentioned for books.

REVIEW PROCESS
The submitted manuscript will be subject to
an external review. The reviewed manuscript, as a rule, is e-mailed back to the
corresponding author for revision and corrections. Reviewers remain anonymous
to the authors, unless they wish to be identified. Some papers received will be
rejected without proceeding to review; grounds for rejection upon receipt may
include that the paper is outside the stated scope of the journal; that the
work is confined to a data report or a report of only local interest; or that
the paper lacks a key element such as in its integration with the current
literature about the subject, data analysis is absent or is inappropriate for
the stated objectives, or the paper fails to discuss the results and their
implications in the context of existing information about the topic. Moreover,
papers focusing solely on taxonomic classification and species inventory in the
absence of analysis of environmental and habitat factors, and those concerned
with man-made e.g. agriculture systems will be excluded. Papers will also be
rejected if there is excessive self-citation, or a lack of originality.
AFTER ACCEPTANCE
Author(s) of the accepted manuscript should
submit the final (revised) version as MS WORD files; all graphic elements and
photos should be stored as separate files, optionally in JPEG, TIFF, PDF or EPS
format.
The accepted article is sent as a PDF file
to the corresponding author for proofreading. Additions and changes, except
small corrections and spelling mistakes, are not allowed in the proof. After
proofreading, the final version of the article must be sent to Zoology and
Ecology together with a scanned transfer of copyright signed by the
corresponding author.
Accepted articles are published online and
are available as Open Access on the website of the Nature Research Centre. The
author(s) of the article receive at least one printed copy of that journal
issue free of charge.
Links to supporting Online Material (figures, tables, references, videos, etc.) can be appended to published articles (available only in the online version of the journal).

2024-02-12. Submission system is up
Dear Authors,
The online submission system appears to be working fine for a while now, so you are welcome to use it as the first choice.
In case you encounter any issues with it, you can then still e-mail the submissions to the Chief Editor (denis.copilas-ciocianu@gamtc.lt).
2023-02-06. IMPORTANT! Regarding (re)submissions as of 2023
Dear Authors,
Unfortunatelly, due to change of our website, we are experiencing temporary technical issues with our manuscript submission system. The form may appear to be working for the authors, but we currently cannot access it from our end.
Therefore, we kindly ask you to instead e-mail your submissions (new or revised) directly to the Chief Editor (denis.copilas-ciocianu@gamtc.lt) until further notice.
If you have not heard back about your manuscript which was (re)submitted in 2023, please also resubmit via e-mail.
We apologize for the inconvenience and hope to fix the problem soon.
2022-02-01. Regarding submissions
Dear Authors,
If you encounter problems uploading your files using the online submission form, now you may also e-mail your submissions directly to the Chief Editor (denis.copilas-ciocianu@gamtc.lt).
We are sorry for the inconvenience.
2022-01-26. Changes in manuscript requirements
Dear Authors,
From now on we kindly ask you, when possible, to provide ORCIDs for all the authors on the first page of the submitted manuscript.
We also ask you to include links with source DOIs in the reference list, if such exist.
We thank you in advance.
